Palms add an exotic touch, are easy to grow and are always available in a large range of sizes, from less than a metre tall, up to 3 or 4 meters, especially in Cordyline and Trachycarpus types.
They look good With New Zealand Flax (Phormiums) grasses, bamboos for a spiky leaved look or planted as impact specimens with gravel, slade or stone underneath over a woven weed-supressant fabric.
Although not a true palm, Cordyline australis or the Cabbage Palm of New Zealand is grouped here. They form a rosette of strap-like leaves, slowly reaching 4m or so.
